I’ve been sitting at home reading through all the notes we’ve received while we were on tour. I love getting notes from fans, they’re so encouraging. A lot of times people are able to express deeper thoughts in writing then they have the guts to say in-person. Which is awesome, it’s definitely easier when you can sit back and take the time to think about what your saying and how you want to say it.
It does, however, strike me as unusual when I read people’s letters to us and they keep apologizing for being ‘crazy fans’ or clarifying that they are NOT getting all fan-boy or fan-girl on us! Haha, well I see no problem with being a crazy fan. I’m a crazy fan of plenty of bands. Eg. If I were to meet Jimmy Eat World, and I hope I do one day…ok so WHEN I meet the dudes in Jimmy Eat World one of these days, I’m going to flippin’ freak the fuck out! All this to say, please don’t be afraid to write us a note or come and say hello. I promise I won’t write you off as a lunatic as long as you don’t do the same to me!
Meeting fans has been an important part of being in this band. Allow me to elaborate… Touring over the last 4 or 5 years has probably been the most eye-opening experience of my life. I’m a very different person from the person I was 5 years ago and some people may think that’s bad. But they’re wrong. See, I used to be a judgmental religious nut who pitied anyone that didn’t see things the way I saw them. Meeting so many different people, at so many different places in their lives has softened my heart and changed the way I view EVERYTHING. It works two ways; maybe you are grateful for us, our lyrics, and/or our music, but I am grateful to you, the people who have come to the shows who have helped me grow. I was in a bubble, my canvas was small like simple-minded thinking, and while I’m far from having anything ‘figured-out’, I now have a better understanding of the world around me, my canvas has real-life context. In a way, you have helped shape who I am, which in turn shapes the attitude and content of our music. So thank you, and again, don’t be shy. We want to meet you!
And that’s all I have to say about that.

jakevp:

I found an old Minolta 35mm SLR in my house, and took it on tour with me this time.

Andy had some extra B & W film, so I figured I’d try it out on our way home. We made a stop at a San Francisco beach to catch the sunset.

Enjoy

from Andy Horst of This Providence:
I’m in a contemplative mood.  I think aside from getting to be around the people I love, (and of course my puppy) my favorite part about being home is the little amount of time I get to myself.  Touring constantly wears on you as a person, especially when you can’t find any time to reflect on who you are and where you are.  On tour you’re always with people and there’s almost always something exciting going on.  So it’s always good to get home, and find an hour to sit and do nothing but think.  And then maybe read a book.
When we were writing our last record we spent a lot of time reflecting, and a lot of time questioning ourselves.  Hence the title, Who Are You Now? And it’s awesome to see how much more poised and at least how much more comfortable we are in life as we write more music.  I can’t wait to see what else we will come up with.
I’m working on a lot of projects right now.  I’m writing some music with 2 of my best friends and opportunity willing, we’ll have something to show you within the next few months.  I’m still planning on setting up a little online photo gallery/store if anyone is interested in getting some prints.  I’m still sorting through my tens of thousands of photos on my hard drives and seeing what’s worth throwing up there, as well as planning some trips to just take more photos.  And also playing out the ideas of another small photojournalism project.  I’ll let you know as soon as I know.. Haha.
I wanna see some more of your guys’ art as well.  We got some incredible pieces from some of you on the Let’s Make a Mess tour.  And I’ve still got them all.  Let’s see your creative side on the ‘Bout Damn Time tour!
See you soon!
